It all began when a young entrepreneur named Harmon Dobson had a bold idea: to serve a burger so large that it required two hands to hold and so delicious that customers couldn’t help but exclaim, “What a burger!” after just one bite. In Corpus Christi, Texas, he named his humble burger stand “Whataburger.”
Paul Barton and Harmon Dobson founded Whataburger. On August 8, 1950, they opened their first restaurant in Corpus Christi, Texas, directly across from Del Mar College. Dobson had met Burton a few months before and decided to fund a small hamburger joint.
His goal was to make a better burger that would require two hands to hold. The burger had to be so delicious that when you took your first bite, you’d exclaim, “What a burger!”
On June 23, 1950, the Texas Secretary of State’s office registered the “Whataburger” trademark.
